Your question

I rent a property through a letting agent but would like to know who my real landlord is. The letting agents won’t tell me. What can I do?

Your answer

You have a legal right to know who your landlord is.  This is set out in section 1 of the Landlord & Tenant Act 1985 which says that if you write to the person or organisation you pay your rent to and ask to know who your landlord is, they should tell you within 21 days.

Find out more in the article linked below which also has a draft letter you can use.

You also do a search at the Land Registry to find out who the property owner is – but be aware that this may not be your landlord.  For example, the property owner could have rented the property to someone to sublet under a ‘rent to rent’ arrangement.
