Your question
I want to make a complaint about a letting agent, what is the best way to do this?
Your answer
You should first try to resolve the issue with the landlords direct. Write a letter to them setting out details of your complaint and ask them to respond within a specific time limit – such as 14 days.
Do this even if you have complained to them orally (ie on the phone or in a meeting) so you have proof that you have made the complaint and tried to resolve it.
If this does not work, then you can make a complaint to your letting agents Property Redress Scheme. All letting agents must belong to a scheme by law and must put details of their scheme on their website and emails.
There are currently two schemes:
You will find details of the complaint process on their website.
If the letting agent is not a member of a scheme, then this is a criminal offence and you should report them to the local Trading Standards Office.
